What is Central Statistical Bureau?

Central Statistical Bureau is a public authority.
The short name for Central Statistical Bureau is Statistics Latvia.

What does Statistics Latvia do?

Statistics Latvia carries out surveys and puts the results together.
To do this, Statistics Latvia employs interviewers and statisticians.

Interviewers ask people questions.
Statisticians put the results together.

The results of their work are called statistics.

What are statistics?

Statistics are numbers that tell you about people, countries, objects, or animals.
Statistics Latvia has all the important statistics about Latvia.

 For example:

  • how many people live in Latvia,
  • how many babies were born,
  • how many people died,
  • how many people want to work but do not have a job.
  • whether prices have gone up or down.

You can find statistics on the official statistics portal.

What is a survey?

A survey means asking people questions about their life, work, family and other things.
Statistics Latvia chooses people by chance to take part in a survey.

How do I participate in a survey?

If you are chosen, you will get an invitation letter from Statistics Latvia.
The letter will explain that you were chosen and how to take part.

You can answer survey questions in two ways:

  • by yourself online – you can do it alone or with help from your family, friends, or carers,
  • by talking to an interviewer on the phone or at home. The interviewer will call you first.

Why is it important to take part in a survey?

Your answers help the government make good decisions for Latvia.

Your answers are confidential.
This means that no one outside Statistics Latvia will see them.
