On June 24-25 annual Conference of European Statisticians was held virtually. Chief Statisticians of national statistical institutions from about 60 countries participated in the meeting to strategically direct statistical work within the region of the United Nations Economic Commission for Europe (UNECE) and beyond.

Bureau of the Conference of European Statisticians sets the vision and direction for all Conference activities. Bureau is a group of leading Chief Statisticians elected among the CES members, and key international statistical organizations are also represented. Aija Žīgure, President of the CSB, was elected for work in the Bureau for the next two years. Along with the representative of Latvia also Chief Statisticians of national statistical institutions of Ireland, Armenia, Canada, Mexico, New Zealand, Poland, Serbia and the United Kingdom were elected for work in the Bureau.

The primary objective of the Bureau is to drive innovations within and beyond the region of UNECE on emerging statistical issues, as well as to enhance coordination of statistical activities for reducing the burden on national statistical institutions.

Following a request of the UNECE Statistics Division and Secretariat of the Conference of European Statisticians, A. Žīgure has had an important role and honour to take part in the procedure for election of the Bureau as a king maker. Already for the third time (in 2017, 2019 and 2021) A. Žīgure as a long-term head of the national statistical institution, within the framework of the procedure for election of the Bureau, surveyed all participants of the Conference regarding their support to the proposed composition of the Bureau by explaining both professional grounds in selecting the members and explaining importance of the work of the Bureau as a whole. On the election results of the Bureau A. Žīgure always reports during the Conference of European Statisticians.
