  • establishment of common classification of economic activities in the EU helping to determine type of economic activity of institutional units engaged in manufacturing or other economic sectors;
  • improvement of comparability of national, EU and international statistics.

Planned update or revision

The draft structure of the new NACE Rev. 2.1 classification is ready. During 2022 it will be aligned with International Standard Industrial Classification of All Economic Activities (ISIC), and in parallel with the legal act procedure, the NACE explanatory notes and all additional materials for the implementation of the new NACE will be prepared.

The following timelines are foreseen:

  • Drafting and review of NACE Rev. 2.1 explanatory notes (October 2022 - April 2023)
  • Finalisation of NACE Rev. 2.1 explanatory notes (End of April 2023)
  • Finalisation of NACE Rev. 2.1 correspondence tables (Q2 2023)
  • Adoption of the NACE legal act (Q4 2023)
  • Implementation of the new NACE (2025 onwards) 

Final proposed NACE Rev. 2.1 structure adopted by the European Commission on 10 October 2022 (see below).

Level 1: 21 sections identified by alphabetical letters A to U;
Level 2: 88 divisions identified by two-digit numerical codes (01 to 99);
Level 3: 272 groups identified by three-digit numerical codes (01.1 to 99.0);
Level 4: 615 classes identified by four-digit numerical codes (01.11 to 99.00).
